“I will turn the figures of “life” and “matter” around and around, worrying them until they start to seem strange…” Jane Bennett
Using materials as the catalyst for action, memory and gratitude we will consider the role of materials, matter and stuff in culture and arts practice. This artist talk and workshop will consider the liveliness of the material world, recognising the co-productive nature of artistry and will give time for playful interaction and lingering in odd places with our material counterparts.
Jem Mellor is an interdisciplinary artist working across sculpture, weaving, photography, film and writing. Interested in the world building ability of materials and their active agency in societies and cultures, Jem’s work develops artistic and pedagogical practices which seek to give space to consider and explore a material’s way of being in the world and the co-productive relationships between humanity and matter. Using performative and traditional research models, Jem’s work is concerned with relational knowledges and how we view, use and collaborate with our material counterparts. www.jemmellor.studio
